Volunteer Profile
Watch this new page! Every week, while the program is running, we
would like to present a profile of one of the volunteers or
participants, so you can get to better know some of the people who are
training with you!
Are you willing to share your story? Can you recommend a friend or
fellow participant? Email
us your suggestions!
This week, meet Maryann!
| Participant Profile |
| Who are you? |
Maryann Deutscher (a beautiful, vivacious wife (sure,
sure, David is saying), a talented, dedicated, hard working
mom (sure, sure the kids are saying as they hope for extra
brownie points), an HR person, a well oiled geezer-jock who
also plays Senior Women’s Basketball (our team was 4th in the
city and actually won our division about 3 years ago!) and a
SMBA volunteer (greatest sport for kids in the city!).

| How did you hear about this program? |
About six years ago, I heard about it from a friend (some
friend huh?) |
| ... and what made you do it? |
The devil made me do it! Just kidding, I thought it would be a
good reason to get into an exercise routine & at the same time
help out. Over the last number of years I've convinced others to
come and out and give the Just-Tri-It a try! I still laugh
thinking about one friend on her bike, peddling hard and saying
"Deutscher when I get off this bike you are so dead..."
but when she was done she was smiling that she did a
triathlon! |
| What will you find challenging? |
- Trying to fit the various activities into a busy schedule. I
actually like the swimming and biking and only like the running
if I can talk (otherwise it is too boring!). I hear lots of
people worried abou the swimming... don't be --- get some of
those little mermaid wings if you want to. I learnt to swim when
I was 20 years old which was only 9 years ago --- lol) which at
the time really wasn't swimming it just wasn't sinking). Then I
took a stroke improvement class which was great and parked my
pride and got a nose plug. Now I can swim much better. The nose
plug is good because I'm not coordinated enough to do the arm
thing, the leg thing, watching where I'm going and breathe all
the same time... so having the nose plug takes away one less
thing to think about!
- Trying to remember everyone's names is a challenge... you
can tell me your name and 15 minutes later I honestly couldn't
remember it if you gave me a million dollars so please just keep
telling me your name and eventually, I'll remember it!

| What do you hope to get out of the program/what do you
hope to teach the participants? |
As a program volunteer, I think the big goal is to have people
getting active and having fun! My sister-in-law, Leah is coming
out the Y-Not-Tri on May 12th to complete it. She's an inspiration
because she is all by herself in Humboldt going swimming, doing
some walk/running (with her kids biking beside her cheering her
on) and doing a bike routine. Folks like her and many others are
the greatest reason to get involved --- it is fun to see others
getting active and just enjoying the fun and friendship! This
program is very unique in how it is so engaging and friendly with
a focus on participating for the fun! |
| What races, if any, are you hoping to do? |
I did the Bridge City Duathlon & will be doing Moe's as
well. I hope to do some 5K or 10K walk/runs in the next few
months. I could be convinced to do a sprint triathlon in Calgary
or Edmonton as I have family there --- so if anyone is interested
just talk to me! There is also the HBC Run for Canada that I think
I might do just cause it's a nice t-shirt and medal! |
